From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there is a sharp increase in automobile fatalities involving teen drivers.  It is what AAA calls the "100 Deadliest Days."  According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the average number of deaths during these summer months is 17% higher per day compared to other days of the year.  Car accidents for teen drivers increase significantly, because teens are out of school and driving more.   During the summer, many teens have just earned their licenses, and they are the least experienced drivers on the road.

The AAA Foundation found that over the past 5 years, nearly 3,500 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days, and nearly two-thirds of those injured or killed are people other than the teen behind the wheel.  According to crash data, the biggest causes of teen-driving fatalities include speeding, impaired driving due to drugs or alcohol, and distracted driving.

Parents are encouraged to teach their teens safe driving habits, such as properly positioning the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors before leaving the parking lot or driveway.  Parents should also talk with their teens about the dangers of speeding, distracted driving, driving impaired, or riding with a driver who is.  Parents can also start the summer off with a parent-teen driving agreement to clearly define your teen’s driving responsibilities, privileges and consequences and set the stage for a safe summer.
