Common Car Accident Locations in Rochester

If you’ve been injured in a reckless car accident, you shouldn’t have to pay for your medical bills out of pocket. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 19,515 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first half of 2023 in the United States.

Reconnect Rochester, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving transportation in Rochester, is the host of the Monroe County Crash Map that helps raise awareness and advocates for safer streets in our community.

The Monroe County Car Crash Map shows that from 2013 to 2022, there have been 5,262 car crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists, 2,094 of them being fatal. This works out to 12 deaths per year on our streets. While these crashes stretch across Monroe County, there are certain intersections in Rochester that are more prone to accidents than others.

The intersections that experience the most car accidents in Rochester include:

  • Lake Avenue & Smith Street
  • Lake Avenue & Driving Park Avenue
  • Lexington Avenue & Mount Read Boulevard
  • Long Pond Road & Latta Road
  • Lexington Avenue & Dewey Avenue
  • Dewey Avenue & Ridge Road West

While there are more high-traffic, dangerous intersections around Monroe County that aren’t on that list, they all share similar characteristics that lead to higher rates of car accidents. These include:

  • More than one lane of traffic
  • Confusing traffic signals
  • Driveways and parking lots that exit directly onto a multi-lane street
  • Distance from the road to buildings, gas stations, restaurants, etc.

Pedestrians and cyclists should always be cautious when crossing a road, but drivers should also exercise caution when traveling in high-traffic areas and be aware of their surroundings even when a traffic signal is indicating that it is their turn. We can help prevent accidents together by being conscious of others on and around the road.

What Should You Do If You Are Involved In A Car Accident?

If you are involved in a car accident, here are the steps you should take:

  1. Call 911 - even if no one was injured, you will need police and emergency service professionals to secure the scene and document the accident.
  2. Document Information From the Scene - Accidents can be emotional and you are likely to forget important details. Make sure to speak with the other party involved and take down their insurance and driver's license along with their contact information. If you can, take a few photos of the accident; note the damage to the vehicles and the surrounding area. This will help you later when you are filing a claim.
  3. Seek Medical Attention - if you were injured in the accident, seek medical attention as soon as possible to get treated. Medical professionals will also document your injuries which is useful when filing your claim with insurance.
  4. Contact Your Insurance Company - make sure to contact them as soon as possible to make sure you are covered. Many insurance policies require you to contact them within a certain time frame, so the sooner you do so, the better.
